Robert Riley, a Wiradjuri man and CEO of Pathways Together, has made quite an impact on ABC’s Gardening Australia with his inspiring story. Having gone through a tough patch in his life with a divorce, he decided to re-evaluate his priorities and focus on things that make him happy. This led him to co-found a native plant nursery called ICaN Nursery in Dubbo, which employs only Aboriginal staff and uses its profits to fund community support programs.
The native nursery is much more than just a business for Robert; it’s a way to bring people back to their country and connect them with nature. As a learning environment, it provides opportunities for individuals to enhance their skills and improve their lives. By working in the nursery and gardens, people not only learn practical gardening skills but also aspects of maths, geography, biology, reading, and writing. Furthermore, the cultural value of the plants instills respect and teamwork, all of which are important values in Aboriginal culture.
One of the most exciting aspects of the ICaN Nursery is its educational program, which hosts visits from local school children. Through this program, children learn about native plants, their significance in Aboriginal culture, and practical gardening skills. Robert and his team make sure that the children are exposed to a rich learning experience that will stay with them for years to come.
What sets this nursery apart is its mission to repair both the people and the country. It is a place where people can come together to work towards a common goal of healing and restoration. As the plants grow and thrive, the people working with them also flourish. It’s a beautiful synergy that Robert and his team have created, and one that has made a positive impact on the Dubbo community.
